For more than 20 years, Danielle Buffett and Andrew Robinson worked across oilsands, refining, and offshore operations, leading teams and managing high-risk work. Like many leaders in industry, they were deeply committed to safety, but one question remained difficult to answer with confidence: How do you know you are doing the right things to prevent people from dying at work?

For much of their careers, the best answer was often, “Nobody died this month.” But they knew it was not a reliable measure of risk, or evidence that fatal risks were truly under control.

After experiencing workplace fatalities within their own operations, and learning from leading experts in fatal risk and critical control management, Danielle and Andrew discovered there was a better answer. Organizations can measure, verify, and demonstrate whether the controls that prevent workplace death are actually working, before tragedy occurs.

That realization changed the course of their careers.

After two decades in industry and senior leadership roles, Danielle and Andrew stepped away to co-found Whitespace. The company was built on a simple mission: help organizations answer the toughest question of all: Are they doing what it takes to prevent workplace death?

Today, they work with companies across high-risk industries to strengthen critical control management programs, clarify fatal risk ownership, improve assurance processes, and build practical systems that move beyond compliance and injury statistics to focus on what matters most: preventing people from dying at work.
